On Monday 18th November Livewire Connections David Walker was invited by The Superyacht Group to moderate a breakout session at the Global Superyacht Forum 2013 on communications focusing on the topic of, “what’s over the horizon?”
When asked about the breakout session, Rebecca Curran, Programme Manager of the Global Superyacht Forum commented. "At this year's Global Superyacht Forum, a group of highly regarded experts in their fields were chosen to help moderate and lead 16 breakout discussions. This new format, paired with an impressive list of keynote presentations, made the 19th annual Global Superyacht Forum the most successful one to date."
New technologies and satellites were the fundamental points to start the discussion. The aim was to assess how the group envisaged communications in the next ten years including what the industry needs to deliver and at what cost to the customer.
The outcome of the session highlighted that in the current market a combination of connections is vital. No one service can currently reach all locations and the demands of every type of superyacht in operation. Flexibility is therefore key in order to meet the needs and requirements of the owner to provide the best possible service provision at the right time.
In order to manage the change over the coming years, education is paramount. Demanding needs in the industry need to be met however there are limitations which cannot currently be overcome. The level of service one receives in the extremities of the oceans will not be the same as is found ashore in a residential property or hotel.
Looking to the future four key elements came from the session:
1. The challenges managing the bandwidth can be improved
2. The market is overhyped
3. Bandwidth will grow
“The session was very informative,” commented David. “Superyacht communications are very much at the heart of what we do every day, and it was very refreshing to be involved in such an active discussion and how collectively we envisage the future.”
