Livewire Connections is no stranger when it comes to providing satellite communications in extreme and hostile environments. The team are experienced working with crews who have raced around the world in events such as the Volvo Ocean Race, the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and the Vendee Globe, as well as crews who have rowed across the world’s oceans.
2015 has been no exception, with Livewire Connections providing hardware and airtime to Dan Parsons and Olly Clark, Atlantic Challenge 2015, in their quest to be the fastest pair to row the Atlantic as well as setting some world firsts and breaking records along the way.
Livewire Connections has supplied two Iridium Extreme satellite phones, each with 500 minutes or data units on. In addition to this, SkyFile mail has been installed and tested on their existing Toughbook laptop. Livewire Connections engineers ensured the data connection to the phones was working before running through the hardware, settings and how to use the handsets’ emergency beacon feature. “Dan and Olly will quite literally be on their own out there and it is important they have the knowledge to get things working again should the situation arise,” comments Matthew Roberts of Livewire Connections.
The satellite phones primary role is for Atlantic Challenge to keep in touch with friends and family via email and phone, however there is the greater role they will play in their mission to raise £250,000.00 for Prostate Cancer and ABF - The Soldiers Charity. Along the way, via the Atlantic Challenge social media pages (Facebook & Twitter), they will be taking on a number of mini-challenges. James Cracknell, recently commented on how boring the continuous rowing will be and it is hoped these mini-challenges will keep the rowers motivated and provide extra awareness for those at home promoting their bigger challenge.
